Sažetak
The objective of this paper is to examine the awareness and the activities of students pertaining to textile waste management, with the purpose of determining the current efficiency of the textile waste management process this population contributes to. The objective of this paper is to determine the level of importance students attribute to textile waste management systems. This research has been prompted by the activities of the Climathon project (October 26th – 27th 2018, Varaždin) and the workshops held based on it, whereby students had to introduce their own conceptual solutions pertaining to textile waste management. A wide range of quickly available textile products and the so-called “fast fashion” are causing a daily emergence of textile waste in every household, mostly in the form of discarded clothing, rags, and other textile materials. Therefore, a good waste management system is indispensable from the environmental point of view and instrumental to generating economic profits. Considering that the student population consists of young people who follow fashion trends and are still a part of the formal educational system, in this research we wish to examine their opinions, viewpoints, and concrete activities in this domain. The research has included students at various universities in Varaždin, Međimurje, and Zagreb County. The data was collected via a survey. The majority of the survey questions were so-called closed-ended questions with various pre-offered answers. The research included a total of 146 students: 85 females and 56 males. The results indicate that the surveyed population has insufficient knowledge of the textile waste management system (both in the area where they live and in general). Even though they attribute great importance to the textile waste management system, active contribution is mostly absent. Only 11.64% of respondents practice sorting their textile waste into the containers designated for specific types of textile waste. The media is their major source of information, whereas economic benefits of the recycling system and reuse are rarely even considered. These results indicate the necessity for investment into education and active workshops for students in order to incite mindfulness and activity in this area.
