Sažetak
Tourism has different effects on the overall quality of life, thus influencing subjective assessments of the quality of life in a certain area. The preservation of the cultural heritage of the city center of Split and Diocletian's Palace is directly threatened by the emergence of mass tourism and the phenomenon of apartment building. Therefore, the goal of the research was to analyze the quality of life of the residents of the city center of the city of Split and Diocletian's Palace. Qualitative research was conducted using a semi-structured interview during July and August 2021 with 25 permanent residents of the city center and Diocletian's Palace. According to the results, most residents have a negative opinion about the current form of tourism in the city and consider the quality of life to be bad. Among the wider positive factors on the quality of life in the city, the location and size of the city, the sea and the climate stand out, while the main disadvantages are the lack of parking spaces, traffic, noise, and communal issues. The COVID-19 pandemic damaged the quality of life on a global level, but the subsequent decrease in touristic demand did not affect the increase of the level of quality-of-life satisfaction. Mass tourism thus seriously impairs the quality of life of the inhabitants of the researched area, where even additional income cannot replace the present negative factors. For this reason, most of the remaining residents are thinking about moving to other parts of the city. The results of this research can therefore be used when designing more effective future strategies that should reconcile the interests of the local population and tourist strategies related to certain areas.
