Sažetak
Quercetin is a strong flavonoid antioxidant widely distributed in plant kingdom. It is found in often-consumed foods, including apple, onion, tea, berries, and brassica vegetables, as well as many seeds. Quercetin appers to have many beneficial effects on human health such as cardiovascular protection, anti-cancer activity, anti-ulcer activity, anti-allergy activity, cataract prevention, antiviral activity, and anti-inflammantory effects. Therefore, it seemed interesting to investigate the influence of this natural product on corrosion process of aluminium, very often used ambalage material. The investigations involved electrochemical methods (potentiostatic polarization, Tafel extrapolation and determination of polarization resistance) while sodium chloride solution (w=0.03), aqueus quercetin solutions and sodium solutions of quercetin ranging from c = 10-2 to 10-5 mol dm-3 were used as model solutions. The results obtained showed that quercetin added to the sodium chloride solution (w=0.03) at concentrations of 10-4 and 10-5 mol dm-3 inhibited the corrosion of aluminium. The inhibition efficiency is the result of protective film formed on the metal surface.
