Sažetak
Emotions can arguably be transformed into words and images ; in turn, these elicit emotions in their audience. Classical Greco-Roman vocabulary has immensely affected both languages, English and Croatian. Emotions, affects, sentiments, passions – all these words come from Latin (neo)classical vocabulary, and their meaning has changed a number of times throughout history. Even today the meaning depends on speakers and their background. In this paper, I aim to discuss how to deal with these palimpsests, or spolia, in literary and media texts, especially when translating. As such, I will address a few medieval Latin examples of emotionally charged images, together with their intertext and context with suggestions for their interpretation and translation.
