Sažetak
This paper is dedicated to the entangled histories of emotions in the Mediterranean, especially its Adriatic part. In the summer of 1571, the Ottoman Admiral Uluç Ali Paşa, born Giovanni Dionigi Galeni in Calabria, sailed into Adriatic with his corsair fleet. The fear in Venetian dominions was such that even the Queen of the Sea herself strengthened the defences around the City. Uluç Ali’s fleet sacked the cities of Ulcinj and Bar and laid siege of Korčula and Hvar, two most important Venetian port-cities in Dalmatian islands. The paper starts with a brief discussion of the meaning of the Adriatic campaign within a broader context of Ottoman-Venetian War of Cyprus (1570- 73) ; which is followed by two other issues: the fluidity and formation of identities in former slaves, and the consequences of Uluç Ali’s campaign on life on the Adriatic islands in the last decades of the 16th century.
