Sažetak
This paper is dedicated to the entangled histories of mobility in the Mediterranean, especially its Adriatic part. In the summer of 1571, the Ottoman Admiral Uluç Ali Paşa, governor-general of Algeria, sailed into Adriatic with his corsair fleet. The fear in Venetian dominions was such that even the Queen of the Sea herself strengthened the defences around the City. Uluç Ali’s fleet first laid siege and conquered the cities of Ulcinj and Bar in Montenegro (both cities remained in Ottoman hands till late 19th century) and then attacked Korčula and Hvar, two most important Venetian port-cities in Dalmatian islands. The city of Korčula was besieged, the arsenal in Hvar was damaged, hundreds of people from both islands were taken slaves. The paper first discusses the events and the meaning of the Adriatic campaign just prior the famous battle of Lepanto and within a broader context of Ottoman-Venetian War of Cyprus (1570- 73). Then in the focus of author’s research are the August raids on the islands, and consequences of Uluç Ali’s campaign on life on the two Adriatic islands in the last decades of the 16th century.
