Sažetak
As a part of scientific cooperation between Fund for financing the decommissioning of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant and the disposal of Krško NPP radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel, Zagreb, Croatia and the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum engineering, long term in-situ simulation of thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) effects on the host rock and buffer material was performed. The experiment was set up in an abandoned iron ore mine with a heating element made of 99.9% copper heated by an electric heater. The borehole and the heating element were made on a scale of 1:4, sodium bentonite was used as a buffer material, and the experiment included the installation of 50 sensors for measuring temperature and 6 sensors for measuring humidity. Measurements were performed for a year, after which certain sensors failed. In addition to the above, an experiment to determine the coefficient of linear heat expansion of rock and the rate of corrosion of copper in underground water were carried out. The results of the THM experiment were verified by a numerical model – simulation of THM effects on the host rock and buffer material. The results of the in-situ experiment and the numerical model correspond to each other and to results of similar experiments conducted in other programs. The aforementioned experiments served to gain the necessary experience of scientists involved in the work and development of the Croatian program for the disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and as an initial step in the development of the experimental part of the Croatian program. In addition to the mentioned research, three more projects were carried out in parallel, which included preliminary geological prospecting of the territory of the Republic of Croatia in terms of site selection, analysis of the possibility of SNF disposal in deep boreholes, and research on the diffusion of tritium through sealing and buffer materials.
