Sažetak
AIM AND PURPOSE The world has been hit by a pandemic that greatly limited the social and physical contact of the population. In order to prevent the spread of the infection, governments have enacted measures that would limit group activities, but also individuals. At the beginning of the pandemic, these measures were extremely strict for the high school population, even banning the movement of minors. With the arrival of the new school year, classes were held in schools, but it was forbidden to organize PE classes in the hall, so a large number of students performed certain types of physical exercise only in their spare time. Thus, the aim of this paper is to assess the physical activity of high school students during the COVID 19 pandemic. METHODS The research involved 196 students from High School Konjic, aged between 15-18. The sample was divided according to gender, male (n=89) and female (n=107). A standardized questionnaire for assessing adolescent physical activity (PAQ-A) was used to assess physical activity (Kowalski et al. 2004). The questionnaire assesses the physical activity of students in the week before completing the questionnaire. The research was done online through the Google Classroom platform, in the school year 2020/21. Before conducting further analysis of the results, the metric reliability characteristic in relation to gender was checked. Results Cronbach's alpha for the male subsample showed high (Crα = 0.86), while for the female subsample the reliability was lower (Crα = 0.78). As subsamples were formed by students from first to third grades of high school, the Kruskal Wallis test was used to verify the existence of differences between grades. As no difference was found, the Mann Whitney U test was used for checking gender differences. RESULTS Based on the obtained results of the basic descriptive parameters, the male students practiced physical activities two to three times after school, in the evening and on weekends, while the female students did it on average once a week. The Mann Whitney U test found the existence of statistically significant differences in questions: activity after school (U = 3052.50, Z = -4.463, p = 0.00), during the evening (U = 3886.50, Z = -2.282, p = 0.04), weekend activities (U = 3278.50, Z = -3.865, p = 0.00), self-description of activities in seven days (U = 3211.50, Z = -4.040, p = 0.00) and frequency of activities in the week U = 3553.00, Z = -3.168, p = 0.00). In the final assessment of physical activity, male students (AS = 2.54) were more active than female students (AS = 1.94). In relation to the results of research by other authors (Bočkaj, 2017, Vidaković-Samaržija, 2013 and Vidranski et al. 2020), the involvement of children in physical education classes contributed to increasing the overall assessment of physical activity, which in this case was missing. CONCLUSION The pandemic has imposed some new forms of behaviour on high school students. Doing physical activity in restricted movement conditions is left to the students. Theoretical teaching of PE enabled students to acquire theoretical knowledge in sports and PE, but the main task was missing, to satisfy the need for movement. In this school year has been allowed to organize PE classes in the hall, teachers have been faced with new challenge to stop the process of hypokinesia and its negative consequences, which was present for almost 15 months.
