Sažetak
People can reach goals by using different regulatory focus strategies. They can be concerned with security and with avoiding threats and losses, or be concerned with advancement and with gaining positive outcomes during the same goal pur- suit. The first are called prevention-focused, and the second promotion-focused. Different dimensions of regulatory focus have been found to affect relationship behavior in committed intimate relationships, especially with regard to different pro-relationship behaviors. However, most of these studies focused on individu- al regulatory focus, not taking into account the fact that goal pursuit also occurs on a relationship level. In this study, we examined how relationship-level regula- tory focus affects both constructive and destructive communication and accom- modation strategies in relationships. We hypothesized that a predominant focus on relationship promotion will be associated with more constructive and less de- structive communication and accommodation strategies. Because commitment is a relationship-specific motive, we expected these effects to be moderated by commitment levels, such that stronger associations should be observed among those who are more committed. In a cross-national (Croatia=376 ; Portugal=325) on-line study, heterosexual adults (75.1% women ; Mage = 24.89 years) provided assessments of their regulatory focus in relationships, commitment, accom- modation strategies during conflict, and communication styles. Overall, results showed that a predominant focus on relationship promotion was associated with greater accommodation and communication that is more positive. Impor- tantly, commitment was a significant moderator in these associations. A focus on relationship promotion was associated with more constructive accommodation, more negotiation and less blame, but only among highly committed individu- als. A focus on relationship prevention was associated with more expressions of feelings between partners, but only among highly committed individuals. Results were stable across countries showing robustness of the observed effects.
