Sažetak
Dubravka Ugrešić, Vladan Desnica, Sanja Iveković, and Dalibor Martinis. Two authors and two artists. Despite their many differences, they all have at least three themes in common: immortality, communism and fragmentation. What unites these themes is a reading of the meaning and materiality of time. This reading is used to argue that in order to open the future to change, the past must be fragmented. Doing so is key for us now, since it seems like the future has already been decided for us. The rest of our lives are already trapped in decades of debt payments, austerity programs decided by other countries, and retirement plans we know will go bankrupt. The present is claustrophobic, and without any room to breathe there is not even a chance to image a different future for ourselves. Foregrounding the fragmented nature of time offers one possibility for opening up the future to change. One way to do this is to understand the materiality of time in the sense of physics.
