Sažetak
The Lower Drava-Sava-Danube Interfluve is a term that historians use when describing the medieval region which spread over the area of today's central and eastern Slavonia and western Syrmia, mainly in the Republic of Croatia. In the Middle Ages, this region represented a specific geographical and historical entity, which was a part of the Hungarian-Croatian Kingdom. The region included Požega, Vukovo, and Syrmia counties, together with the south part of the County of Baranya. Since this area was not a part of Regnum Sclavoniae, formed in the 13th century, and it was located on the southeastern borders of the Hungarian-Croatian Kingdom, its development was different from the rest of the Kingdom. A kind of disunity in the territorial and political organization is also reflected in the disunity of the church organization, where the studied area was divided among several dioceses – the Diocese of Pécs, the Archdiocese of Kalocsa, the Diocese of Syrmia, and the Diocese of Bosnia, in the period of the high and late Middle Ages. The disunity likewise applies to the distribution and concentration of the monastic orders. Since this area was located on the very borders of the Kingdom, far from its center, it could, in a way, be considered a periphery. Nevertheless, considering the specifics of the development of the area of the Lower Interfluve, it has the characteristics of a center. This presentation will try to answer questions such as the connection between the church organization of the Lower Interfluve and other parts of the Kingdom and Southeastern Europe, the influence of noble families on the church development of this area, and the role of the church organization and individuals at the very end of the Middle Ages, when the Ottomans arrived in this region.
