Sažetak
In this paper, I will give an overview of literature and reflect on the ethical topic that has grown in importance in the last thirty years. This is done inside the framework of Western culture, which has the tendency towards a kind of (normative) universalization of animal rights. In doing so, I will refer to the utilitarian and contractualist approach to animal rights set out by Peter Car- ruthers (1992). There will also be a discussion of the inevitability of Kant’s deontological approach. Finally, a prominent place will be occupied by spe- cism having an undesirable and absolutely negative social consequence. This will reflect the main aim of the paper, namely showing that animals should be perceived as a very important part of life on Earth and that it is high time for people to be aware of it, accept it and live accordingly.
