Sažetak
Dysplastic nevus is a melanocytic lesion that shows a certain level of clinical and histological atypia. There has been considerable debate about the definition of dysplastic nevi, the histologic and clinical criteria used to define them, and their biological importance. Dysplastic nevi represent the main differential diagnosis of melanoma and are often very difficult to distinguish clinically, dermoscopically and histologically from the earliest stage of melanoma – melanoma in situ. Mutations in the BRAF gene are common in melanomas and represent an early oncogenic event in their occurrence. It has long been thought that such oncogenic mutations occur only in malignant tumours, but recent data has shown that both nevi and melanomas can share a BRAF mutation. The aim of this study was to analyse BRAF mutations in samples of dysplastic nevi and melanoma in situ. The results may help shed light on the currently unclear role of dysplastic nevi as possible precursor lesions of melanoma.
