Sažetak
The aim of the paper is to present one of the early literary works by a Croatian author Jagoda Truhelka (1864 - 1957) published in 1894 under the title Tugomila. Truhelka was a teacher, but also a prominent literary author in the first part of the 20th century, who transferred her pedagogical ideas not only through her teaching practice, but also in a series of professional magazine articles as well as in her artistic work. Tugomila is actually Truhelka's first published book and it was primarily written for children. The narration follows the tragic life of Tugomila Kalinić, an orphaned girl who, despite of all the misfortunes that life brought her, succeeds in becoming a teacher. In the paper Tugomila is going to be analysed on several different levels, from its narrative structure and many characteristics that make this work an example of Bildungsroman, to its reception and a wider socio-cultural context of the time of its publication.
