Sažetak
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the tooth's supporting structures, primarily caused by gram - , anaerobic bacteria in susceptible individuals. There is a bidirectional link between the two diseases involving the systemic inflammation mechanism. In patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), an individual's sus- ceptibility is than without DM, thus increasing the severity. This association depends on glycemic levels. Even though peri- odontitis is a local infection, it causes low- grade inflammation, contributing to the systemic inflammatory bur- den. Periodontitis may increase the diabetes severity, enhancing insulin resistance, and making controlling glu- cose metabolism difficult. Both conditions represent a severe public health burden and should be detected as early as possible. Global health measures are needed to raise awareness of the link between the two conditions. A multidisciplinary approach, including dentists, endocrinologists, and other healthcare professionals, could help improve the management of these conditions and the patients' overall health. In 2021, the world celebrated the anniversary of the discovery of the life- saving hormone insulin. For the occasion of its centennial, this paper aims to remind us of the, two-way relationship between DM and periodontitis and raise awareness of the need to act together.
