Sažetak
As an urban space, a city is a manifestation of human essence and everyday human life in the form of a by-product of people’s existence within a space. People’s existence influences their immediate environment, adapting the space to their needs and desires. We have a primordial habit of adapting to our environment, and using our senses to differentiate between everything around us and organise our perceptions. Rivers and their waters have always been important to humankind, serving as a font of life, a source of food, and a thoroughfare ; their waters have been used to irrigate fields, and they have provided energy as well. Water gives earth a restorative power, and the strength of fertility. In addition to offering a power that had to be controlled and exploited, water has also shaped obstacles and borders with its position, as a natural framework restricting the expansion of a community. This paper uses cultural hydrogeography to describe the cultural landscape of Osijek’s Inner Town, discussing the links between the landscape, place and space on the one hand, and human communities, their heritage and identity on the other ; analysing the symbolic ways in which these relations are produced and reproduced in the context of water (the Drava) as an element, a font of life, a guarantee of the civilisation’s survival, and a medium for memory. The Inner Town, taking advantage of natural and related geopolitical advantages provided by the Drava, served as an important regional centre in a variety of political formations, which contributed to its development as an important spot where a line is drawn between the societies and civilisations of the East and the West. The authors conclude that the Drava defines the highly symbolic nature of this City, providing its inhabitants with a font of life, a means of purification, a centre of renewal, and a mnemotope.
