Sažetak
The human body is home to a large number of distinct microbial communities, microbiota, with the thickest population in the GI tract. Development of NGS platforms, bioinformatics tools and culturomics techniques ignites the wide expansion of microbiota research in recent years. The insights obtained contributed to our knowldge of the role resident microbes and multipla interactions shaping our inner world, promiting our health but also leading to serious disease. Gut microbiota influences and modulates human physiology, metabolis, nutrition and innune functions. The imbalance of gut homeostasis is associated with the onset of many severe pathological conditions, including metabolic sydrome, type 2 diabetes, obesity and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Therapeutic approaches at microbiota level, such as dietary interventions with probiotics, prebiotics and symbiotics as well as faecal microbiota transplantation, represent a promising avenue towards establishing and maintaining of well-being as well as curing disease and improving underlying symptoms. Our group is interested in thoroughly exploring host-gut microbiota interactions, specific triggers and potential diagnostic markers in order to define noves strategies for managment of IBD.
