Sažetak
Connection of philosophy and medicine is known from the time of Hippocrates, father of medicine, and it is still alive today in the thought that health is more than just some physical state or characteristics. Influence of philosophy on medicine is recognized in two aspects, content (forming medical explanations under the influence of philosophical theories) and methodology (organizing medicine modeled on philosophy). This influence results in the understanding of philosophy as the foundation of medicine, according to which the physician must first clearly understand human nature in general. It is therefore not surprising that in history numerous philosophers were also physicians. Father of modern medicine, Avicenna or the Prince of Physicians was also philosopher and physician. His philosophical thought was marked by rationalism and empiricism and his book Al Qanun fi al Tibb or The Canon of Medicine was the most influential medical book of his time that influenced medicine from the 11th to 17th century in the Islamic world and the Europe. The aim of this paper is to show that The Canon of Medicine is philosophically interesting and that it reveals philosophy as the foundation of medicine in the aspect of content. The Canon of Medicine shows that for Avicenna knowledge of logic, metaphysics, philosophy of nature and ethics forms medical explanations and ensures quality of medical practice and the proper choice of therapy verifying that Avicenna can be classified among the thinkers who believed that philosophy is the foundation of medicine.
