Sažetak
Rational use of antibiotics is of high relevance in improving health care and it has emerged as a global challenge due to antimicrobial resistance. The aim was to show the changes in the consumption of antibacterials for systemic use (ASU) over four years and to compare the consumption to some other European countries. In the 2008-2011 period, the consumption of ASU is in constant increase. Expenditure of ASU in 2009-2011 period showed a continuous decrease. The consumption of ASU in DDD/1000inh/day is similar to their use in Norway and Denmark and significantly higher than in Slovenia. Expenditure in Norway and Denmark is higher than in Croatia that is due to price difference of medications between these countries. Raising the awareness about the rational use of antibiotics is very important. It will decrease antibiotic expenditure and have a positive effect on health care budget and on improving health care by reducing antimicrobial resistance.
