Sažetak
The cross-border area of Croatia and Serbia is characterized by a specific wetland ecosystem of the middle Danube region with exceptional biodiversity, many rare, protected species and also key species and key habitats of Natura 2000 ecological network areas. However, the ecosystems of wetlands and floodplains are subject to constant anthropogenic pressures, which leads to overgrowth and ultimately loss of biodiversity. Therefore, the WetlandRestore project planned the restoration of wetlands in the central Danube on a total area of 3, 000 ha through the conservation of existing aquatic habitats and planning future areas of revitalization, through interstate cooperation and exchange of experiences. Therefore, this paper presents the revitalization plans for five wetlands - Biljski rit and Zmajevački dunavac in Croatia and Zasavica, Bara Trskovača and Jegrička in Serbia. The presentation consists of the process of making revitalization plans that include a review of historical data and the historical state of the wetland systems in question, an overview of the existing state as well as an overview of the planned state. Finally, the paper presents and establishes a transboundary biodiversity monitoring system based on indicator species, which implemented in cooperation of experts from both sides of the border, with the active participation of all stakeholders.
