Sažetak
Although large carnivores are challenging to conserve, the transition to a post-industrial economy has taken large areas out of human use that could be returned to a ˝natural˝ state. This enables natural processes of large carnivore’s recolonization. Since large carnivores’ management also includes areas where human-animal interactions are present, it is important to analyse media-mediated messages about large carnivores, as potential large carnivore’s recolonization of semi-natural habitats contributes to additional human-wildlife interactions. Therefore, this paper presents an analysis of the perceptions of media-mediated messages for a key species of large carnivores - the wolf (Canis lupus). The article presents media messages analysis about the wolf from the state, regional and local media in Croatia in areas where the wolf is currently constantly present and areas where it can potentially be recolonized or has been historically present. Initially, a historical overview of the interaction between wolves and humans in Europe are given. Then, the results of the conducted analysis of media messages regarding the character of information, source, stakeholders and final perception towards wolves are presented. Finally, guidelines for further media coverage of the species in question are provided to convey accurate information about human-large carnivores interaction in areas where animals are currently present, but also in areas suitable for potential future recolonization.
