Sažetak
Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) are being intensively researched and discussed as a sustainable alternative to Portland cement (PC)- based concrete, as the elimination of cement in the binder composition reduces CO2 emissions and allows the use of waste materials in concrete production. In addition, AAMs can be designed to have comparable physical and mechanical properties to PC concrete. However, during their service life, structures are exposed to various environmental factors that affect their durability. Despite the numerous studies, there is still a great need for data on the durability of AAMs and their correlation with mechanical properties for reliable AAM application. This paper presents the results of a preliminary experimental study on the durability of two slag- based alkali-activated concrete mixes. The alkali and silica contents were varied to develop two AAM concretes of different compressive strength classes, while the water to binder ratio and slag content were kept constant. The results were compared to the reference PC concrete mix. The properties tested in terms of durability are freeze-thaw resistance, carbonation resistance, chloride penetration and water permeability.
