Sažetak
Evaluation of the drug use is a system of continuous, systematic, criteria-based drug evaluation that ensures the appropriate use of drugs. A comprehensive insight into drug utilization as an economic and primarily a public health issue can only be acquired in the context of overall health state of the respective population. Antipsychotic drugs are used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. A review of the cost and consumption for antipsychotics in Croatia, as well as the data on medicine usage are obtained. Collecting and analyzing the data on antipsychotics consumption may lead to the improvement of the antipsychotic therapy. During the period 2005-2007, all antipsychotic drugs which were in the market in Croatia, showed a continuous increase in prescribed DDD/1000inh/day and in financial costs. For the entire period haloperidol, promazine and olanzapine were the most prescribed drugs. The overall consumption of antipsychotics in Croatia (8.30 – 9.65 DDD/1000inhabitants/day) is lower than in EU and other Western countries, where a consumption of antipsychotics is about 10.0 – 11.0 DDD/1000inhabitants/day (1). By collecting and analyzing data useful for the improvement of pharmacotherapy, we also obtain information for the many other factors essential for the rational health care.
