Sažetak
OBJECTIVES: Statins are drugs used to prevent cardiovascular diseases. A review of the cost and consumption for all medicines and statins in Croatia in 2005-2007 periods, as well as the data on medicine usage for these two groups are obtained. The importance of collecting data on statins consumption is in correlation with the improvement on cardiovascular diseases therapy. METHODS: Agency for Medicinal Products and Medical Devices in Croatia is authorized for collecting and processing data on medicines consumption. Data on medicine usage between 2005-2007 was gathered from obliged entities, processed by the DDD/1000inh/day and ATC classification, and the analysis of the financial indicators was done as well. RESULTS: It was established that the total medicines market in Croatia in 2005 was €520 million (5.20 % for statins C10 group), in 2006 it was €562 million (6.58 % for C10 group) and in 2007 it was €670 million (8.17 % for C10 group). By processing consumption data as DDD, between 2005-2007 consumption of C10 group was 35.62, 45.77 and 67.89 DDD/1000inh/day, respectively. Expenditure of statins individually was as follows: simvastatin was at the first place (20.23 DDD/1000inh/day in 2005 and 20.87 DDD/1000inh/day in 2006) and at the second place was in 2007 (23.5 DDD/1000inh/day). Atorvastatin was at the second place (13.03 DDD/1000inh/day in 2005 and 20.73 DDD/1000inh/day in 2006) and at the first place, among statins, was in 2007 (39.86 DDD/1000inh/day). CONCLUSIONS: During the period 2005-2007, all statins, which were in the market in Croatia, showed a continuous increase in prescribed DDD/1000inh/day. For the entire period atorvastatin and simvastatin were the most prescribed drugs. By collecting and analyzing data useful for the improvement of pharmacotherapy, we also obtain information for the many other factors essential for the rational health care.
