Sažetak
Changes in the qualitative-quantitative composition, together with the spatial-temporal distribution of planktonic ciliated protozoa, physical variables and potential food items were measured at three fixed stations in the open waters of the northern Adriatic Sea during 1998 to 2002. The ciliate community was dominated by small oligotrichs and tintinnines. In 1998, 1999 and 2001. their abundance (> 3000 ind. l-1) was comparable with other eutrophic marine environments. The results of this study suggests that ciliated protozoa are significant correlated with phytoplankton biomass and picophytoplanton abundance. Contrary, the low values of ciliated protozoa in 2000. and 2002. were the result of atypical oceanographic and productivity conditions in the entire region of this sea. The presence of the large mucous aggregates causes a significant decrease in the density of the protozoan communities.
