Sažetak
The Újlaki (Iločki) family, along with the noble families of Garay (Gorjanski), Kórogy, and others, play a prominent role in the research of the political and social history of the nobility from the lower interfluve of the Drava, Sava and Danube rivers in the late Middle Ages. Due to various family connections and relations with the kings, in just a few decades, the Újlaki estate grew, and their main settlement, the city of Ilok, became the most important urban centre of the lower interfluve. As owner of many important estates in the mentioned area, Nicholas of Ilok was able to advance rapidly on the social scale advanced so much on the social scale and gain an immense political power, which placed him in the very centre of the mid-15th century dinastic turmoils and enabled him the influence on the election of the future kings. The topic of the Újlaki family, their possessions, relations with the kings and other noble families has been extensively covered in both Croatian and Hungarian historiography. Likewise, Nicholas of Ilok was the subject of many debates, first in matters of relations with Matthias Corvinus, his role as the king of Bosnia, and finally in the wars against the Ottomans and making the city of Ilok the largest urban settlement of the Late Medieval lower interfluve. For the study of Nicholas of Ilok, his relationship with Matthias Corvinus is immensley important. Nicolas was at first a close ally of Matthias' father, John Hunyadi, but it all changed in the late 1450s, when Nicholas established close relations with Frederick III of Habsburg and became the godfather of Frederick's heir Maximilian. Given that, as a result, Nicholas of Ilok betrayed King Matthias Corvinus, during which he was also baptized the godfather to Maximilian I, the son of Frederick III. In this presentation the historical and social aspects of the godfather role in the Middle Ages will be examined, as well as the example of Nicholas of Ilok and Maximillian of Habsburg. Also, a review of the medieval view of godfatherism, the role of godfatherism in the creation of political allies and the consequences of choosing godfathers in relation to the dynastic turmoil in The Kingdom of Hungary-Croatia will be presented.
