Sažetak
The presentation is focused on two semifictional texts that problematize working and living conditions in the United States in its early twentieth-century articulation from an immigrant perspective of South-East European provenance. These are: "Memories of an Immigrant" by Yugoslav political activist Stjepan Lojen, published in 1963 in Zagreb and the autobiographical novel ''Laughing in the Jungle: Autobiography of an Immigrant in America" by Slovene American writer Louis Adamič, published in 1932 in New York and London. Both texts with their contextual layer are referring to the related experience of emigration to the United States in the early 20th century and in both texts we can detect similar narrative strategies in questioning utopian and fictional quality of American imagery in contact with "real" working and economic conditions in the United States. In this paper, I will focus on these two texts as a specific type of narratives of the immigrant experience, asking the question: what type of “social knowledge” are these texts meditating and how those knowledge is being articulated in their narratives? My conditional thesis is that economy lies at the heart of their texts as the generator of narration and as a force which affects all other issues in their texts. In this regard, these works are pointing to the specific quality of capital and its articulation reveals complex relationship of fictional and non- fictional narratives and indirectly pointing to complex relationship of economy and literature.
