Sažetak
Geological samples may have a complex composition and may record both original geological processes and an anthropogenic impact. One of those anthropogenically derived samples are mine tailings, i.e. waste material from mineral processing plants. The manganese tailings analysed in this study were sampled at the location of the former TEF plant (Ferroalloy and Electrodes Plant), Šibenik, Croatia. In total 2 types of tailing samples were collected at the location (bulk composite sample and big fragments of tailings). In addition, dust from the roof of the TEF plant, which was collected in 1980, was analysed. Preparation of the tailings sample included sieving in 8 fractions (< 0, 063 mm to > 4 mm), while the dust sample was not sieved. The analytical methods included X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD), carbonate content determination and the BCR sequential extraction analysis. The sequential extraction leachates were analysed by High Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS). XRPD analysis reveals calcite, bustamite, cristobalite, manganese oxides and quartz as the main mineral constituents of the samples. The carbonate content in the tailings varies between 34.4 wt. % in bulk tailings sample and 40 wt. % in < 0.063 mm fraction of tailings sample, and 7.7 % in the dust. The BCR sequential extraction analysis was performed on the < 0.063 mm fraction. The analysis, in combination with total digestion analysis, revealed 20 g/kg of Mn, 23 g/kg Al and ≈32 g/kg of Fe in tailings with similar values in dust samples for Mn and Al, but higher for Fe (45 g/kg). In addition, there were 595 mg/kg of Pb and 494 mg/kg of Zn, while in the dust there were 490 mg/kg of Pb and 2.2 g/kg of Zn, respectively. The BCR analysis of tailings revealed that Al and Fe are predominately concentrated in the residual fraction. Manganese in tailings is predominately hosted by the reducible fraction probably in the forms of Fe-Mn oxyhydroxides, while Pb is mostly concentrated in the oxidisable fraction i.e. bound to organic matter and/or sulfides. Zinc shows similar concentrations in the reducible and residual fractions in tailings. In the dust sample, Al, Fe, and Pb are predominately hosted by a residual fraction, while Mn and Zn are equally hosted in all fractions.
