Sažetak
Solar photocatalysis is a promising method for removing air pollutants using ultraviolet radiation which stimulates redox reactions between a photocatalyst, compounds and contaminants in the air. Significant effects on human health are related to ammonia contribution to the formation of secondary particulate matter [1]. Toxic substances such as ammonia are mostly related to emissions from agriculture [2]. As well, increased emissions of ammonia have been impacting on biodiversity as a result of nitrogen accumulation on plant species diversity and composition within affected habitats. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is widely used photocatalyst for air purification due to its high chemical stability, nontoxicity, commercial availability and optical electronic properties. Nowadays, photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide on different rubber polymers is already accomplished [3]. Therefore, in this paper the experimental results of photocatalytic degradation of ammonia on recycled rubber pads with TiO2 are presented. In experiments, TiO2 was immobilized either by modified sol-gel method or by adding the TiO2 directly into mixture during the industrial production. A flow-through reactor set up with defined single inlet, a photocatalytic wind tunnel (PWT) was used. Rubber pads were placed at a fixed distance of 10 cm from the irradiation source parallel to the air flow. Measurements were performed with sensors for humidity and temperature, gas analyzers GA5000 (Geotech) and Testo 350. The kinetic study resulted with intrinsic reaction rate constants calculated using axial dispersion model including mass transfer considerations and first-order reaction rate kinetics with photon absorption effects. Different immobilization of TiO2 on the rubber pads have resulted on photocatalytic activity in which a modified sol-gel method has shown as the more favourable regarding to the achieving ammonia degradation towards molecular nitrogen.
