Sažetak
Tomato waste is considered as a rich nutrient source containing phytochemicals, among which are carotenoids pigments, therefore it can be recycled for the uses of biologically active compounds. This research carried out and compared carotenoid isolation efficiency from dried tomato peel waste by applying two different extraction methods, classical extraction or refluxing and Soxhlet extraction, using a series of solvents of different polarity. Larger amounts of extracts were obtained by refluxing, as well as with more polar solvents indicating that temperature and solvent polarity are important extraction parameters. The extracts were purified by preparative thin layer and column chromatography, then characterized by IR-spectroscopy which confirmed the presence of carotenoids.
