Sažetak
According to mathematics teachers’ personal experiences and the educational research findings, it is known that students at all levels of education have difficulties in working with geometric concepts and solving geometrical problems. One of the possible causes is students' inability to coordinate different processes in working with geometric figures, which are necessary for learning geometry, especially in solving geometric problems. For successful work with geometric figures, Duval's theoretical framework proposes a synergy of different cognitive processes: from spontaneous and informal recognition of the elements of the figure to mathematical processing and understanding. In this pilot study, we are analyzing ways in which 75 pre-service teachers are solving four geometric problems that are posed and processed according to Duval's theoretical framework of geometrical figure apprehension. The research aimed to determine to what extent and how successfully pre-service teachers use geometric figures in solving selected problems. A mixed analysis of the collected data reveals that students generally use all processes but usually separately instead of mutually, sometimes incorrectly due to poor visualization skills and misunderstanding or misapplication of geometric concepts. Based on the study’s findings, certain teaching activities are proposed to ensure the functional connection of different processes for more efficient processing of geometric figures and, consequently, understanding geometric concepts and more successful solving of geometric problems.
