Sažetak
Organic food production is growing rapidly worldwide as a response to consumers’ demand. People are mostly motivated to eat organic food because they believe it’s healthier than the conventional one. Organic food is produced without using pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, and genetic modification. Therefore, organic food production is less polluting groundwater, surface water, soil, and air compared to conventional food production. Because of the way of producing, organic food contains significantly less pesticides residues, antibiotics, and nitrates compared to conventional food. Many comparative studies on the nutritional value showed that organic plant product contains significantly more polyphenols, vitamin C, some mineral components, as well as higher levels of omega-3 fatty acid, α- linolenic acid, and conjugated linoleic acid in organic meat and dairy products. However, the variation in outcomes of comparative studies is very high. Other factors such as soil quality, weather conditions, plant fertilization and plant age at harvest could have influenced the result. Feeding experiments conducted on animals showed positive effects of an organic diet on weight, growth, fertility indices, immune system, and stress resistance. Also, results from a small number of human cohort studies indicate that people eating organic food have a lower incidence of allergies, and overweight or obesity. However, to finally determine how organic food consumption can affect human health, new large long-term intervention studies should be carried on.
