Sažetak
Peripheralization and dislocation of some Adriatic islands often lead to many social, economic, demographic and cultural problems that put them in an unequal and unbalanced position with the places on the coast. On the other hand, they make them less endangered by the processes of mass tourism and apartmanisation. However, islands are more susceptible to negative demographic processes such as depopulation and senilisation. This primarily means that their social capital has reduced potential and is particularly evident through the position of the local community on the islands and its connection, principal actors, their roles, and the activities of the local community in general. Principal local actors are often incompetent or influential enough to change the status quo. Coastal communities are on the other side less isolated because everything is more easily accessible to them, even the negative consequences of mass tourism and apartmanisation so typical for the Croatian coast (e.g. Šibenik and Zadar region). That makes them less sustainable both ecologically and socially. In the context of theoretical concept of social sustainability, smaller islands (and smaller places on large islands), but also the smaller coastal places, could be more sustainable than larger places but it depends on existing human capital and local community. It brings small places into a very sensitive and fragile situation. As stated concept of social dimension of sustainability proved developed primarily in terms of local community cohesion and attachment with the place of living, it turns out that such places often rely on a traditional paradigm that emphasizes customs and traditional ways of life (e.g. Povlja and Postira on Brač). Activities that local communities continue are often associated with heritage, local culture and agriculture and depends on the engagement of the local community. A similar context is shared by coastal places, especially smaller ones, and it can be said that the so-called the new locality of the last few decades marks both types of this sea (water) landscape. The new locality proves to be a kind of model of defence against the disappearance or complete loss of their identity in the wider globalisation context. This often leads to strong links between local communities and patriarchal and conservative values as well (e.g. the role of women). At the same time increasing awareness of women at the local level regarding a decrease in patriarchal patterns, especially in the younger ones. The cultural dimension of places on the island and on the coast (cultural heritage) also is often neglected and it should be better incorporated in future cultural trends. Some of the results collected last two decades through a qualitative methodology (semi-structured interviews) will be presented and described in a titled summer school.
