Sažetak
In 1609, Muṣliḥuddīn Muṣāfī, who was a founder and professor of a madrasa in the Bosnian town of Banja Luka, compiled a collection of Arabic texts on teaching, learning and moral behaviour entitled Tuḥfat al-mu‘allimīn wa hadiyyat al-muta‘allimīn (A Gift for Teachers and the Present for Those Who Study) and then translated it into Turkish. The manuscripts of both the Arabic text and the translation are housed in the Oriental Collection of the Archives of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb. They were extensively dealt with in a paper published by Linda al- Dujaily and me in 2015. The present article focuses on the reasons for writing the work (sebeb-i telif) and the reasons for translating it (sebeb-i tercüme), as explicitely expressed by the author, but also on other motives and goals that can be inferred from the exhaustive introduction (mukaddime) and conclusion (hatime) of the work. Attention is drawn to the differences between the Arabic introduction and the one in the Turkish version, which also reveal the possible underlying motives.
