Sažetak
The influence of atmospheric variables on the frequency of odontogenic abscesses was studied during 1991 and 1994, i.e. during a total of 730 days. Average daily atmospheric pressure, average daily temperature and relative humidity were taken into consideration as relevant atmospheric factors. In total, there were 161 days without odontogenic abscesses and 569 days with odontogenic abscesses. The median frequency is two abscesses per day. There is no correlation between the patient's gender and the number of odontogenic abscesses in a given day. Odontogenic abscesses occur more often on days with a lower temperature, mostly if the temperature is lower than 8 C (project is 11.6 C). We did not find a significant association between air pressure and the frequency of abscesses. Based on this research, we cannot claim that there is a cause-and-effect relationship between odontogenic abscesses and meteorological conditions. Small changes in atmospheric conditions cannot cause the formation of odontogenic abscesses, but they can be a good biometeorological indicator of the connection between atmospheric conditions and human health. We emphasise that it is necessary to distinguish the correlation of phenomena and their causality.
