Sažetak
Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba L.), also known as maidenhair tree or ginkgo, is the only living dioecious species of the Ginkgoaceae family. It is a well-known medicinal plant used in traditional and Western medicine. Because of its long use in traditional medicine, ginkgo is considered a natural reservoir of molecules with health- promoting potential. The health-promoting properties of ginkgo are associated with the presence of specific metabolites such as flavonoids, terpenoids, and trilactones, but many other compounds may also have synergistic effects. To date, more than one hundred flavonoids with unique structures have been identified in Ginkgo, including flavonol and its glycosides, flavone and its glycosides, flavanone and its glycosides, isoflavone and its glycosides, flavan-3-ols, biginkgosides, and biflavonoids. Flavonoid dimers or biflavonoids consist of two identical or non- identical flavonoid units connected in a symmetrical or asymmetrical manner by an alkyl- or alkoxy-based linker of different length. Their role in plants remains unknown, but their bioactivity and potential role in human health treatment are better studied. In Ginkgo, 13 different biflavonoids have been described to date, of which ginkgetin, isoginkgetin, amentoflavone, bilobetin, and sciadopitysin are the most commonly described. According to literature data, they show antioxidant, anticancer, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory activities, as well as a potential role in the treatment of cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurodegenerative diseases. During the presentation, we will present summary data on the health-related properties of Ginko biflavonoids that we have recently published [1]. We will also present data on the biological activity of Ginko biflavonoids collected as part of the current Croatian Science Foundation project (UIP-2019-04-1018).
