Sažetak
The Internet is a platform on which many new media have emerged, enabling greater citizen participation in the production, publication, and sharing of media content. The new, active and interactive audience has taken a place originally reserved only for professional journalists. According to Deuze (2003), interactivity is one of the fundamental features that distinguish traditional from new media, because it allows ordinary citizens to become journalists. Readers’ comments are only “one of the forms of citizen journalism and represent the most popular form of citizen participation in media content creation” (Ruiz et al., 2011). In the Republic of Croatia, regulation of digital content is determined by the Electronic Media Act, the Criminal Code, and the Code of Ethics of the Croatian Association of Journalists. The aim of the research in this paper is to determine the strategy of media houses in relation to readers’ comments as a form of participatory journalism. In-depth interviews with the three editors-in-chief of the most commented Croatian news sites 24sata.hr, Net.hr and Index.hr were conducted in November 2020. The research showed that editors of Croatian news sites are interested in cooperation with citizens and use all available tools for content moderation. They have the highest hopes for artificial intelligence and machine tools that detect unacceptable content in comments, which affect the work of journalists, but also the perception of the news site. Editors-in-chief consider the current legal solutions to be insufficient and therefore pro- pose greater involvement of experts in the adoption of new legal practices.
