Sažetak
The aim of this paper is to examine disability represented in the prose work by the contemporary Italian authoress Valeria Parrella. In her novels, "Lo spazio bianco" and "Tempo di imparare", Parrella focuses mainly on mental and physical disability, which often cause also emotional and social disability, and not only in the person that has a handicap, but in his/her parents, relatives, friends, as well, since they find themselves in the condition of being betwixt, i.e. in an intermediate position, between those who are defined by some members of the society as “normal” and those who are considered “different from normal”. In Parrella’s novels, we confront with the analysis of socio-cultural messages , which, in the contemporary culture, are created in relation to ability and disability, as well as to the concepts of “normal” and “abnormal”. Consequently, one of the most important aspects of the representation of disability in a literary text is its tendency to avoid the stereotypical portrayals of the individuals who are less able than others, which invalidate and undermine the importance of this problem as an individual and a social one.
