Sažetak
By allowing hundreds of thousands of workers to temporarily work in Western, capitalist Europe, communist Yugoslavia allowed some of its citizens to come into contact with a different political, economic, and social system than the Yugoslav one. For many of these people, this resulted in a loss of faith in socialism as the best system for regulating social relations. Also, Yugoslav workers in Western Europe came into contact with anti-Yugoslav and largely anti- communist political emigrants from Yugoslavia, and various intelligence services in Western European countries sought to recruit informants among them. Thus, the departure of a significant number of Yugoslav citizens for temporary work in Western Europe, in addition to bringing a number of benefits to Yugoslavia, also created a certain security threat. The paper analyzes the activities of Yugoslav state institutions aimed at preventing the spread of “negative” Western influences among the population of migrant workers, as well as possible actions of migrant workers that would harm the Yugoslav communist regime. Also, the paper addresses the issue of difficulties for the Yugoslav military leadership arising from the fact that several hundred thousand conscripts spent most of the year outside Yugoslavia.
