Sažetak
The death of the undisputed Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito was an event that was eagerly awaited and for which various elements, that wished the collapse of the communist system in Yugoslavia but also the collapse of the Yugoslav state, were preparing for in various ways. One of the more prominent was the Croatian political diaspora. The Croatian National Congress (CNC), an umbrella organisation that brought together a large number of Croatian political emigrants, had taken a series of actions, primarily of a diplomatic and propagandist character, seeking to make the most of the situation that has been impatiently expected since the mid-1960s. CNC, as well as other anti-communist and anti- Yugoslav elements, did not succeed in striking significant blows to the Belgrade regime in the period under review in this paper. Nevertheless, the actions taken by CNC have contributed to spreading awareness among the world public that there were a significant number of Croats in Yugoslavia and in the world who wanted the establishment of the independent and democratic Croatian state, and how instability in Yugoslavia in the context of tense relations between ideological-political blocks, West and East, can pose a threat to peace in Europe. This paper is based primarily on archival sources (documents of Yugoslav intelligence services) and magazines by the Croatian political diaspora.
