Sažetak
Objectives: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a chronic progressive disease and patient education on the importance of lifelong treatment is very important to improve the quality of life. The aim of this study is to show if nurseprovided education can improve quality of life in patients with CF. Methods: 12 male and 14 female adult patients of Clinic for Pulmonary diseases Jordanovac were recruited for this study. Each patient received nurse-provided education on importance of respiratory clearance, medication, inhaler maintenance and demonstration of inhaler therapy use, the role of nutritional support and maintaining optimal body weight. Each patient completed Short form 36 Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36) before and 4 months after education. Results: Four months after individual education, there was a 7% increase in number of patients who responded their overall health was better than before. Questionnaires indicate a positive trend in improving perception of one’s health and quality of life although there were no statistically significant differences after education. Conclusion: Although results are not statistically significant, patient’s education is an important part of treatment and eventually improvement of quality of life. Results are impacted by a small sample, surveys are done anonymously and answers are subjective which is not ideal. Quality of life survey was conducted only 4 months after education although the assumption is to compare condition after one year. Further studies are needed.
