contrast-enhanced voiding urosonography
Sažetak
Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is one of the most common anomalies of the urinary system in children. Today, contrast-enhanced voiding urosonography (ceVUS) is becoming recognized method for the diagnosis of VUR in children in specialized centers. This paper’s aim is to examine the indications for ceVUS in children, determine the association of characteristics with VUR findings and possibly predict which children are in higher risk of VUR. VUR was detected in 38.9% of tested children and the most commonly diagnosed was grade II (60.3%) and grade III (29.4%). Our results show that VUR occurs irrespective of gender, age, previous ultrasound findings, causative agent and the severity of urinary tract infection (UTI). VUR is more common in children with recurrence of UTI. In the group of children with the first UTI not caused by E.coli or a recurrent UTI, most commonly boys are suffering from a severe VUR (IV-V grade ; 66.7%), and girls are suffering from a moderate VUR (II-III grade ; 100%). Also, in our finding the incidence of VUR in prenatally diagnosed hydronephrosis is 33%. There is a need to develop an algorithm for the treatment of children in the Republic of Croatia after urinary tract infection (UTI) and this new exam should be included in the algorithm as well as the need to refer all children with doubt of VUR to a specialized center where is possible to do ceVUS.
