Sažetak
The textile industry is a major consumer of drinking water, but it is also considered one of the largest polluters in the world through their wastewaters. In this study, real textile wastewater (TWW) was used to evaluate the possibility of reusing the same but treated water for dyeing cotton knitwear and discharging it into waters bodies according to the Croatian Regulation on Emission of Wastewater. The treatment was performed using hybrid membrane process that included a membrane bioreactor, ultrafiltration, and, dense membrane nanofiltration as the final step. During the experiment, pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), turbidity, conductivity, ecotoxicity, total suspended solids (TSS), total organic carbon (TOC), and color were monitored before and after each step of the hybrid process. The results showed extremely high removal efficiency of the studied parameters with the last step of nanofiltration. COD, turbidity, conductivity, ecotoxicity, TSS, TOC, and color were removed by 71.1%, 56.0%, 97.6%, 100%, 100%, 94.7%, and 66.7%, respectively. Treated TWW meet some minimum permitted concentrations for discharge into waters bodies according to the Croatian Regulations on Emission of Wastewater. Also, the determined pollutant parameters in the treated water are in accordance with the reuse of the wastewater for dyeing cotton knitwear.
