Sažetak
Following the polemics of contemporary Croatian linguistics related to the issue of vocative and category of vocativeness, but also current European linguistic considerations, it is clear that the vocative occupies a special place in the study of linguistic phenomena at almost all levels of linguistic analysis. Languages with a productive vocative form include Slavic languages, and among them Croatian, in which the status of the vocative is differentiated, which will be presented in detail with special reference to the status of vocative in the Croatian language. Vocative grammatical morphemes are increasingly lost by compensating for nominative grammatical morphemes, and the vocative as a case is poorly represented in the discourses of spoken and written media of the modern Croatian language, which leads to gradual modification of the Croatian case system and restructuring of the Croatian grammatical norm. The aim of this paper is to determine the position of vocative in the Croatian language by analyzing the corpus of written and spoken texts of contemporary Croatian public discourse, which includes various forms of journalistic, political, advertising, sacral, social media, and other related public discourses. The results of the research will point to a new phenomenon in the Croatian language related to vocative “demorphologization”, rather than the extinction of the vocative, that affects syntactic relations but focuses on its inherent vocative characteristic related to communication functions, i.e., its semantic-pragmatic features. The paper will focus on recording, analyzing and interpreting the specifics of vocative expressions and vocative forms at the morphological, syntactic and semantic-pragmatic level. The final results of the analysis of vocative in Croatian public discourse will show whether there are justifiable reasons for its gradual "demorphologization" in order to set valid theoretical determinations.
