Sažetak
Background and Purpose: Acarbose is the a-glucosidase inhibitor and delays the uptake of glucose or fructose into the circulation. The aim of this study was to determine activities of glucose-6-phos- phatase in liver homogenates of CBA diabetic mice on feeding with and without acarbose in chow. Materials and Methods: Diabetes was induced in CBA mice by i v, injection of aloxan-monohydrate (75 mg/kg b.m, ) seven days be- fore treatment with acarbose. There were three groups of CBA mice: control (C) mice, diabetic (D ) mice fed with ordinary chow and diabetic (D/A) mice fed with chow prepared with acarbose (100 mg/ 1 00 9 chow). Catalytic activity of glucose-6-phosphatase was assayed in liver homogenate by measuring the phosphate liberated from glucose-6-phosphate. Results and Conclusions: Non-significant change of mean catalytic activity of glucose-6-phosphatase (p >0.05) was determined in diabetic (D) mice VS. control group (C). Significantly lower (p<0.05) catalytic activity of glucose-6-phosphatase was determined in diabetic CBA mice fed with the chow prepared with acarbose (D/A). Significant inhibition of hepatic glucose production in the diabetic CBA mice fed with chow with acarbose could be explained by some additional action of acarbose which is partly absorbed in the systemic circulation.
