Sažetak
Teaching medical English presents a lot of problems especially to a large group of students. Today, with all the accessibility to various media thanks to technology, students are exposed to English more than before. However, if they do not read specific scientific articles or watch medical shows or documentaries, they are not so much exposed to specific vocabulary. Even if they deal with certain medical journals, they come across terms that are useful in their future scientific work. Still, they are not so much exposed to natural, everyday medical English, especially the one that can be used in communication with their future patients. Many medical students do their practical work in summer in foreign countries. Also, with globalisation, and hopefully, after COVID 19 pandemics, there will be more and more tourists coming to our country and also expecting medical personnel to speak English, if some unexpected medical event occurs. A small number of hours of medical English at the School of Medicine in Zagreb, as well as large numbers of students (three hundred distributed in eight groups) does not allow any communicative lessons with role plays where students could practice their spoken English. For this reason, the idea of creating a corpus of spoken medical English occurred, which could be helpful both for students and teachers of medical English. Using corpora in teaching vocabulary is very useful, particularly in teaching ESP vocabulary. It is easier to get access to a written medical corpus than a spoken one. Therefore, the aim of this study was to create a corpus of spoken medical English based on TV shows, like ‘New Amsterdam’. The research consisted of several stages. First, the corpus was collected from the forty episodes of ‘New Amsterdam’ series (the first two seasons). The text was transcribed, and later on, it was analysed by Collocation extract in order to find the most useful collocations. Afterwards, the collocations were checked and those that belong to general English were left out. This way, the list of fifty most frequent collocations was obtained. In the next stage, students were checked to see how well they know these collocations and where the mistakes occur most frequently. This was helpful for professors to know which collocations should be more emphasised. In conclusion, teaching medical English using a corpus is very beneficial for many reasons – students learn the words, particularly their collocations, that they would not normally encounter in scientific text. This way, they improve their communicative skills in medical English.
