Sažetak
The Ragusan philosopher Nicolò Vito di Gozze (Dubrovnik, 1549 –1610) wrote a Latin commentary on the first book of Aristotle’s Rhetoric in the early 1600s. It is an extensive and a fairly unknown work: its manuscript was preserved in the Vatican library since 1657, but it was published only recently (ed. Wilfried Potthoff, Heidelberg: Universitätsverlag Winter, 2006) in a highly deficient edition ; moreover, Potthoff misinterpreted Gozze’s commentary as a baroque rhetoric manifesto. I am going to present the results of my work on the new edition of Gozze’s commentary - forthcoming with Brill in 2023 - and revise Potthoff’s assertions, presenting for the first time to the international public the manuscript and the structure of the work, as well as some of its key sources (e.g. the 1591 edition of Maioraggio’s translation of Rhetoric). Also, I will contextualize the commentary within the author’s career as a philosopher, politician and jurist.
