Sažetak
The transitional environments (salt marshes, tidal plains , lagoons etc.), their sedimentary characteristics, and the composition of benthic foraminiferal assemblages along the Eastern Adriatic coast are not well known. In this study, we described the distribution and composition of the foraminiferal assemblages and the granulometric properties of the sediments in three geographically separated environments and related them to each other to define impact of the local (geologic) background on sediment composition. A total of 18 short sediment cores were collected from transitional areas in November 2019, seven at the mouth of the Mirna River (Istrian Peninsula), five in Soline bay (Krk Island), and six at the Nin site. The uppermost 2 cm were studied from micropaleontological and granulometric points of view. Identification of foraminiferal species and Ammonia morphogroups (after Hayward et al., 2021), absolute and relative abundance, and ecological (biodiversity) indices were performed on standardized samples. Particle size distribution was determined, which allowed classification of the sediment. At the northernmost site, at the mouth of the Mirna River, fine-grained, muddy sediments with low species diversity predominate. The sediments in Soline bay is characterized by greater species diversity and a uniform proportion of sandy and silty components. The coarser sediments occurred at the Nin site, the sediment was primarily sand and foraminiferal assemblages displayed the greatest species diversity. The representatives of the genus Ammonia dominated in all foraminiferal assemblages. Specimens of the beccarii morphogroup were most abundant at the Nin site, while the tepida morphogroup predominated at the other two sites the differences in the diversity and proportion of certain genera and morphogroups of benthic foraminifera were related to the nature of the sediment and have been shown to be related to the influence of freshwater supply and the source of the sediments.
