Sažetak
Of the many world-famous politicians and military officers who visited Egypt during the second half of the nineteenth century there were several American Civil War generals who lived or travelled there. This chapter focuses on three of them: William Wing Loring, George Brinton McClellan and Ulysses S. Grant. Loring visited Egypt for the first time after 1859, and between 1870 to 1879 he served in the Egyptian Army, along with fifty other American Civil War veterans. He published several articles and a book about his life and military experiences in Egypt between 1877 and 1884. McClellan visited Egypt during the 1860s and 1870s but not in a military capacity. Between autumn 1874 and winter 1875 he travelled with his family around the Nile on a dahabiyya called Nellie. His description of and thoughts about the voyage were published in three articles in Scribner’s Monthly (1876). Ulysses S. Grant visited Egypt from 5 January to 9 February 1878, and again at the end of January 1879 during his world tour (May 1877–Autumn 1879). Descriptions of his world tour were later published in 1879 in a book by journalist John Russell Young,
