Sažetak
From 25th November until the 26th December 1902 Fran Srećko Gundrum Oriovčanin travelled around Egypt. In a previous paper (Egypt and Austria XI, Vienna 2016) the author gave a very brief description of his voyage and how he participated the First Egyptian Medical congress in Cairo. In his 453 pages long unpublished manuscript, Gundrum observed and described a considerable number of the archaeological sites in the Nile valley that he visited in Alexandria, the Cairo region and during his voyage on three steamboats from Cairo to Aswan and back to Luxor. In this paper, the author describes the part of his voyage in the Upper Egypt region around the city of Luxor, which took place from the 4th to the 7th December 1902. The main focus is his sightseeing around the archaeological sites and monuments in Luxor area which he visited: the Luxor temple, the Karnak temple, the tombs in the Valley of the Kings, the ruins of the temple of Seti I, the Deir el-Bahri temples and tombs, the Ramesseum, the Memnon Colossi, the valley of Deir el-Medina, the temple in Medinet Habu, and the necropolis in Sheikh Abdel-Quma. The Gundrum’s dairy contain very detailed archaeological and historical data about each site with various details of the preservation of these monuments at the beginning of the 20th century. They are an amazing source of knowledge about the archaeology and history of Ancient Egypt. According to the data that he wrote in this manuscript we can consider Gundrum as one of the first Croatian amateur scholar who focused his research on Egyptian history, archaeology and culture. But what sources did he use for his writings? We cannot be sure about it, but we can presume what he could use in the beginning of the 20th century. In the description of Gundrum sightseeing of the Thebes area author will also discuss his possible sources for his historical and archaeological narrative. It seems that Gundrum used a lot Baedeker traveller’s guide of Egypt and Sudan for his description of various archaeological and historical sites. For his trips around the Thebes area he completely followed the suggestions in Baedeker travel guide. But for many parts of his diary we still could do be sure what sources he used.
